GREEN | Learning to live sustainably

Since 1997, GREEN has been working to promote sustainable development, water issues, education and public participation. Through educational projects aimed at several target groups, mainly youngsters, GREEN aims to foster enlightened attitudes and policies towards sustainable water management, which includes, inter alia, the rational use of water; prevention of, and an effective approach to, water pollution; greater public participation and worldwide solidarity in the use of this precious resource.

GREEN is part of the 'Global Rivers Environmental Education Network', or 'GREEN' for short. This world-wide network unites people and organisations dedicated to the protection of water, the source of all life. There is no possible substitute for water: for drinking, food production and hygiene. Water is a critical factor in the balance of nature. Economic development and agricultural production are inconceivable without water of sufficient quantity and quality. Due to the ever-increasing world population, the amount of water available, per person, is decreasing; if policies concerning the use of water don't change, by 2025 two thirds of humanity will face a severe shortage of water. Rivers which run through different countries, crossing frontiers, pose a serious threat of international conflict. Nor is the quality of water improving: in many places it is so polluted that it is no longer suitable for human use nor for supporting nature. The costs of purification and the production of drinking water are constantly increasing. World-wide, 1,4 billion people currently have no access to drinkable water: if nothing changes, this number can only increase, dramatically.

GREEN, PROTOS and ROTARY launch TROUBLED WATERS II
The exposition "Troubled Waters" will open on World Water Day, March 22nd 2008, in the Antwerp ZOO. The exposition explains the link between water in the world and water in our neighbourhood to children and their parents. It puts everybody's right to water in the spotlight.
More than 1 billion people don't have access to potable water. For 18 million children, especially girls, obtaining drinkabale water is a fulltime job. Often in difficult circumstances. That jeopardizes their future, and leads to flight and migration to the countryside.
TROUBLED WATERS is a key initiative of GREEN and PROTOS, two non-profit organisations specialising in water development programmes and sustainable development education. As a whole, the project also comprises a second exposition, a photo book, a congress on water for youngsters and an educational package. The exposition in the Antwerp Zoo is its latest development, running in co-operation with Rotary and with the support of Vivaqua and the European Community. The exposition is co-financed by a new European project, involving NGO's from Italy, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Slovenia and Spain.

Liberate children from the water struggle!
More than 1 billion people don't have access to potable water. For 18 million children, especially girls, obtaining drinkabale water is a fulltime job. Often in difficult circumstances. That jeopardizes their future, and leads to flight and migration to the countryside.
Access to potable water and toilet facilities for everybody, whithout discrimination, for an acceptable price, easy of access and in total safety is nevertheless a fundamental human right.
By 2015 vzw GREEN asbl wants to give access to potable water to as many children as possible. So we can guarantee their entitlement to an education and to a decent development.
Help vzw GREEN asbl to give a futur to the youth in Morocco and elsewhere in Africa. Help vzw GREEN asbl to set up a solidarity action, so African schools and villages can have access to potable water.
